It's good that you can share here and get it out of your system. it
helps to have people to talk to, especially people in the same biz.
Just remember that sometimes you do gigs like this to pay the
bills allowing you to accept more interesting, and maybe not as
lucrative, gigs where you can really express your creativity. Also,
know that there are some decent people there (they may be
incognito) and some of them are picking up your card and will
hire you for some really nice, cool event.
You are also a henna ambassador; you are explaining henna to
people who are completely ignorant, you are setting a good
example for them, allowing them to see henna at its best. And
then there is the concept of the Henna Geisha.
However you choose to look at it, allow yourself to transcend the
annoying people (tho deal with the fondlers quickly!) and know
that you are doing very difficult and sometimes dangerous henna
missionary work, making it better for henna artists everywhere!
Yours is a noble cause.
I just had a crummy henna event, an Afghan Heritage Festival.
You'd think it would be a great venue for henna, but we made
$50 for the whole day!! I can't count how many sneers I got when
i told people my prices (they start at $10)...actual sneers, in my
face! Then the ubiquitous
This time I was told that if you wash it off right away it it will be
darker. HUH???? Then her friend wouldn't pay for the design I
did on her.
That coupled with the heat wave, the dust, the lack of food etc.
really made it into a crappy day. We did see a lot of great
costumes and talked to a few nice Afghani women.
All of that was offset by a great bridal henna party last night with
lots of interesting, intelligent, funny women who REALLY
appreciated henna and what talent I have, and who all picked out
really lovely designs or let me do my own thing. Whew! There is
balance in the universe!
