In reply to: Henna on People of *very dark* Color...Contrast of hue intensity vs just contrast of hue. posted by Maureen on August 25, 2002 at 01:56:32:

I agree. That's why I term it "a different genre".

People of color may have yellow undertones, red undertones, blue
undertones, violet undertones. You have to estimate this and choose
the henna and the terp that will contrast that. Working with people
of color is complex, but GODDAMN when you get it RIGHT it just ROCKS!

This lady had a blue/violet undertone and I felt certain I could lay
down a good terp and have it jump right out. If you're not born into,
married into, friends with, people of color you won't catch onto this
subtlety unless you're told to look for it.

The point is not DARK, the point is CONTRAST. Saksena, bless his
heart, only looked at "light is high caste, dark is low caste" and
people who wrote books published in the American market place quoted
him without scrubbing off the caste layer. Damn shame. If America
was Francophone, we'd have assimilated African aesthetics on henna.
America is Angliphone and people who wrote and published in English
were referenced things published in English (read INDIAN) unless they
got down and dirty and did their homework. Indian authors,
particularly Saksena, published in English and he's referenced, with
all his failings, in the most frequently accessed publictaions.. And,
Indian/Americans are the fastest growing group of immingrants in the
US, which dominates the internet, and they have the best banking
infrastructure interface for henna ordering/export for commerce with
the US. That means INDIA has the most clout in the US in terms of
information, commerce and influence, for better or for worse, far
beyond Iran, and the rest of the Middle Eastern group which tends to
firewall any communication and commerce with the US. Especially since

Anybody got a "wierd-shit-o-meter" index on this event?????? Damn.
There is a GORGEOUS little brown bat trying to excape 6 cats and a
pugdog. I think it's ok...................
