Question about bindi designs....
Posted by Erika on August 25, 2002 at 19:50:49:I sell bindis at my booth when I set up at festivals. I usually
wear the elaborate "bridal bindi" set of jewels. I get a lot of "oh
you look like Gwen Stefani." Well...one day I get a lady walking
with a girl who looks to be about 8. Her mom tells her to turn
around and look at my face. The girls face lights up and she
says, "Oh she's a...a....a VIRGIN!!!" I kind of laugh to cover up
the fact that my mouth is gaping, and I fully expect the mother to
correct the girl or to at least blush a little....NOTHING! They
just turn and keep walking. I got to thinking about it, wondering
what this 8 year old could know that I don't know. I'm thinking....
a bridal bindi....typically worn by brides....in India....hmmm...I'm
guessing that brides are typically virgins over there...so maybe I
was adorned as a virgin should be. What are styles for a married
woman? I have 3 kids, definitely haven't seen virginity in quite a
while. And why the heck are Gwen Stefani, Madonna, and Sumita Batra
wearing Bridal bindis if they are only to be worn by virgins? Were
this little girl and her mom simply mistaken in their interpretation
of bindi styles?
