: guessing that brides are typically virgins over there...

According to my old boss, a Hindu woman from somewhere near
Calcutta: bridal bindis are worn by the young virgin girls in the
family, who have important roles during the lengthy marriage process.

:And why the heck are Gwen Stefani, Madonna, and Sumita Batra
: wearing Bridal bindis if they are only to be worn by virgins?

Because they look cool, that's why! (That's certainly why I wear
them!) They are really too pretty to reserve for their traditional
use, in many peoples' opinions. I certainly have gotten nothing
but "ooo, how pretty!" responses from Hindus and Indians. Most folks
from "over there" that I've met are thrilled to see someone who uses
and appreciates their clothing and body decoration styles. I've had
my bindis admired frequently, as well as my dupatta (that wonderful,
wonderful scarf that keeps the sun off and makes you look all exotic
and such) and of course my lunch boxes (currently I have the Kali
one).

Honestly, I have never had anyone criticize the non-traditional uses
of bridal bindis. I've received no questions about my sexual
status... most people figure I'm wearing it because it's pretty.
(Though leave it to the children to comment on it! :-)
