I use boring old Crayola Watercolor Pencils that most supermarkets
carry. I dip the pencil in a cup of water, then sketch. I don't
draw out the whole thing. I will draw the main parts of the design
to make sure I get the spacing of design elements correctly, or I
also use them for knotwork to plan where the junctions are. Any of
the colors will do except red, which makes it look like you're
bleeding.
