My dad did nothing but criticize my henna for years (and years, and
years, about 10 of them). I heard nothing but how bad it looked, did
I have a skin disease, how was I going to get a job, etc. I
eventually learned to just ignore it. (And after a point it seemed
like he made the comments out of habit more than anything, just to
make sure I knew he still disapproved.)

The last time my dad was well enough to go out (he died last year
after a long illness) we were having dinner in a restaurant. The
waiter exclaimed over my henna, asked me a million questions (mostly
about applying it, stencils, technique, etc.), and my dad suddenly
sat up straight and proudly announced "She does all that *herself*!"
(I think he meant freehand). It was about the highest compliment or
acknowlegement I could have hoped for. :-P
