Natacha Atlas is my first and foremost recommendation. All should
hear her! After that, Hamza el Din is nice stuff that would play well
in the background; Rachid Taha, Cheb Mami and Khaled are all pretty
happening, but might get a little noisy in the background- they
demand a full attention eh. Ofra Haza(pbuh) pretty much goes without
saying. Gnawa Diffusion is an *excellent* band that I think would
work well in the background too, though some of it is pretty rocking-
might be hard to sit still to! Afram is an excellent group if you can
find them; I think they have mp3 downloads on mp3.com. Apache Indian
makes some nice bouncy reggae influenced music. Quite simply put: I
LOVE Wael Kfoury. He's Egyptian pop, but he's just... he's.. just GOT
it. =) Some bellydance cds can be really nice in the background,
especially when they are instrumental. I like Suhair Zaki
(multitudinous different spellings on this one) for that. Some of the
Arabic music compilation cds out there- like Rough Guide and Putamayo
are really good. A range of styles should be able to please anyone.
And since it's going to be relatively low (aesthetic, not a concert)
most anything that is just plain good should work. For sheer beauty,
Caesaria Evora (Cape Verde) works a magic spell and Ismael Lö
(Senegal) is simply... without description. Beautiful. I could ramble
on for weeks about music... really, I could!
(who still can't believe that someone recognised the euskara! yaaa!)

: I'm making a compilation cd or 5 and would love to hear what you
: recommend for henna background music. I remember this was a topic
: too long ago, but for the life of me I can't find it in the
: anybody re-help? I like Zakir Hussain, Sheila Chandra, others. What
: do you listen to?
