IN terms of dying silk, working up a dye mix in a reactive iron,
lowgrade silver or copper pot does seem to blacken the stain. Mixing
henna in those pots makes, if I understand it correctly, metallic
salts when the metal interacats with the acid ... and some of those
salts are toxic. I've been uneasy about putting that in paste on skin.
Many people have problems with metal on their skin (for instance many
people have to wear pure gold earrings and other piercing implements
because everything else makes them go nasty/crusty/itchy?) Many people
have trouble with the EURO because their hands get rashes from the
metals. I"d work with a metal pot for silk dying, but not for skin
henna.... just being cautious.
