I agree there's got to be some sort of middle ground.

I won a small item on eBay for approx. $12 and promptly mailed the
money order to an address in my own state. The seller said it was
never received and wanted me to send duplicate payment.

To trace the money order was going to cost about $15 (I forget the
exact amount) and take several weeks. To replace it would then cost
$12 plus another fee to buy it, then postage to send it again and (at
that point) send it registered return receipt requested.

I figured the $12 item would then have cost me about $41 and decided
to forget the whole thing. The product was not worth that much to
me, nor did I anticipate establishing a business relationship with
that seller. Not long after that they disappeared from eBay, never
leaving feedback.

I knew I had paid and I agonized about whether to send another
payment. Negative feedback posted as the transaction developed made
me suspicious of the seller. I would make different decisions with a
trusted seller with whom I wanted to continue doing business.

I now use PayPal and reduced the number of headaches in my life.
