From the encyclopaedia of essential oils on Sweet Orange Oil -

"Distilled orange oils is phototoxic: its use on the skin should be
avoided if there is danger of exposure to direct sunlight. However,
there is no evidence to show that expressed sweet orange oil is
phototoxic."

I spoke with the chemist who I purchased my oils from specifically
about the citrus oils since I prefer their smell. Though he clearly
advised against most, cold expressed sweet orange was absolutely fine
he said. I HATE the smell of cajeput, eucalytpus, tea tree, but love
what they do to henna stains so I use the orange to cover up their
strong smell without making it too perfume-y. I've been using the
orange oil in my mix since the "terp discovery" and have not had one
negative response on my friends/family (people I see regularly) or
from clients either via email/phone or at later events. ...

: Yes, bergamot is a doozy...
: i have also never experienced problems on myself with citrus oils,
: but i think Catherine has a nasty reaction... sweet orange is
: phototoxic too, or so i thought, which was why i stopped using it in
: my paste on clients.

:
: : Yes, you are right about some citrus oils... especially bergamot!
: : Don't use bergamot, no matter what, unless you're in Alaska and
: : don't have much sun exposure. Personally I buy my bergamot with
: the
: : bergaptene removed so I minimize my liability. I have not had any
: : trouble with sweet orange or grapefruit in terms of
: : photosensitivity, and they smell wonderful so people love them.
: : Thanks for your reply... this is the absolute best place to
: converse
: : with people who have *intelligent* things to say! :)

: : : : What
: : : : : do you guys mean when you say "terp"-ing? Are you adding
: oils
: : : that
: : : : : are supposed to contain terpenes (or monoterpenes)?
: : : :
: : : : Yep.
: : : :
: : : : If that's the
: : : : : case, I have been reading that people use cardamom and
: cajeput
: : to
: : : : : terp their paste? Well, if you are interested, cardamom
only
: : : : : contains 6% terpenes and cajeput (member of the melaleuca
: : family)
: : : : : contains less than 10%. My friend, a fellow aromatherapist,
: : and
: : : I
: : : : : have been using just plain ol' Indian-store Mumtaz henna
with
: : : oils
: : : : : that contain 85-95% terpenes and are getting fantastic
stains
: : : that
: : : : : last weeks (with very short light orange periods). In our
: : : : : aromatherapy manuals we have found that the oils that
contain
: : the
: : : : : highest terpenes are most citrus oils (especially pink
: : grapefruit
: : : : : and sweet orange) and the pines (mostly Siberian fir needle)
: : (I
: : : : : would not recommend using the pines since many people
: : experience
: : : : : allergic reactions and most people get along well with the
: : citrus
: : : : : oils).
: : : :
: : : : The citrus oils have difficulties with being out in the
: : sunlight.
: : : I
: : : : believe the term is "phototoxic". I'm not sure exactly what
: : they
: : : do,
: : : : but once people start using words like "vomiting" and "rash",
I
: : : look
: : : : elsewhere.
: : : : The terp levels in cardamom, cajeput, ravensara, and certain
: : : : eucalyptuses, among others, are quite enough for our purposes.
: : : : besides, I LOVE the smell of cardamom paste!
: : : :
: : : : My main recipe is to use lemon juice for the main
: : : : : constituent, then pink grapefruit, sweet orange or lime (2
or
: : 3
: : : : : different ones).
: : : :
: : : : I know that lemon oil and citronella are unfriendly when
: exposed
: : to
: : : : sunlight. I don't know the relative values of each of these
: : oils
: : : but
: : : : what's true for lemon is usually true for lime. I think
Orange
: : is
: : : : okay, but I wouldn't swear to i
