Its my experience that they're not interchangeable at all.

It's not the *fragrance*. It's not the *OIL*. It's the monoterpene
alcohols that are making the difference. Monoterpene alcohol content
is, as far as I can tell, the whole game, becuase its acting as
solvent for a hydrophoboc molecule (hennotannic acid). You can
exchange monoterpenes alcohols for monoterpene alcohols (as long as
you have some guarantee of harmlessness and purity) but don't try to
exchange oils or fragrrances, because they're not even operative.
