: way...a book and companion design CD. I wonder how they are
: protecting their property while making it a real handy and flexible
: piece for artist?
They have money for copyright lawyers to defend their property. I
don't have that resource. I have to defend my author's property by
being careful with it.
The books I've seen that have book and reprintable disk have
copyright-free or near free clip art. Some artist, somewhere either
got paid a lump sum for rights to their work, or the artist is long
dead. My authors are alive, and get paid per book sold. I don't have
the money to buy their work outright, and I hope they don't die soon.
I want for them to have money every time someone uses their
material, or to at least limit the amount of money that gets drained
away when people recopy the work. And, I have to try to spot and
prevent big gaping holes that would suck out all their work and money.
Remember the ripoff Navneet Shamballa book? I don't want that to
happen to Alex, Erfan and the other people who trust me to publish
them. If I put out a book with CD together, that would be a first
class ticket to that sort of ripoff. I don't know where or when it
would come from, but it would be near inevitable.
