Re: rant awayPosted by Wednesday on June 8, 2003 at 21:52:49: In reply to: Henna racism - just a rant posted by PPC on June 8, 2003 at 19:51:02: I've done so little henna in the past (proportionally)I can't sayfrom experience. I had one call for a large party and that was my first thought...I've no experience with bridal or ethnic henna beyond admiring everyones pictures...eeek...(told her up-front)...turns out that is not what they want anyway. (The World According to Me....)I've worked in a lot of places with and owned by people of a lot of different ethnicities and certainly different cultures and countries have their own styles and attitudes...etc..... Now I look for compatibility (still multi- ethnic, just less intense). Unless you really need the money and/or like the challenge of really adapating to another code of expectations (certainly swimming in a different sea is fun!...but...) you are better off not having to deal with someone who is, from the onset, so of such a limited frame of attitude. Too often I've seen it used as an excuse to harass and even abuse (and no one "group" has the corner on the market, I have two friends who are very over weight and though skilled in their fields, have the same problem). This kind of narrow mindedness is sad but sometimes it spares you from a more difficult situation, that of being hired by and trying to satisfy someone who never will be pleased because you are just-not-right or just-don't-fit her comfort range. People with that kind of operating system can not really be lectured either because a comfort zone is really about fears and fear issues can get intense. This is how they protect themselves from being challenged by a different reality than the one they are familiar with (and, as someone else said, it's her loss). I really think the best cure for it all is time. The wonderful people on this site and the multi-ethnic sharing that goes on is a great example of an art and of people with no borders. Give the others time to catch up. Maybe several life times, but hey, that's why we are eternal.
