so many non-indians shop our grocery store, it's normal. but
Rochester is a highly multi-cultural area. However, I get more
comments and stares from N-I's when I wear anything traditional
especially Mehndhi. The Indian traditions are so intricate, even I
have to call Mom to ask 'what does that mean again?' If someone
asked me to cater a traditional italian wedding, I would reply
with "I'd be happy to and I'm so glad you trust me to roll gnocci
for your special day, even though I'm not italian, thank you!"

: good to see the many view points!
:
: Well, someone talked about a degree, right there there's a
cultural
: difference :))) Measuring someone's ability by the degree is
probably not
: the way Aunty Bibi measures a henna artist my friend. Mehendi is a
very
: personal thing in weddings and a white girl would stick out like a
sore
: thumb, not because of her colour but because of her missing all
the
: cultural significances surrounding mehandi and not being able to
understand
: the language, etc. For e.g., a Punjabi (an Indian language)
speaking Aunty
: Bibi may not hire a Telugu (another Indian language) speaking
mehandi
: artist for the same reason, cultural and language barrier! You see
it is a
: wedding and there are so many customs that surround this mehandi
stuff and
: no one wants to ruin a wedding!
:
: Also, someone mentioned about the Indian grocer giving stares.
Well the
: only reason this could happen might be because white visitors to
Indian
: grocery stores is rare in your part of the country, not to
discourage you
: from buying Henna. Afterall he is runnign a business! In my part
of the
: world this is not rare event since many whites come to Indian
grocery to
: buy Indian food, so no one cares if a white person walks in. One
has to
: understand human nature, we all give a second look to strange
events
: including the minor accidents on the road eventhough they are not
that rare!
:
: Good luck!
:
: : Here in NYC there is an Italian restaurant that has a Mexican
: : Elvis impersonator...he's not very good, but not because he's
: : Mexican, but rather because if he's really good he would be in
: : Vegas not in some tacky restaurant!
