reading Orr's work, and have several more I'm waiting for arrival.

My focus is what happened *before*, not what is call "devadasi" now.
And yes, 1000 years is a long time to try to keep a convention in
place and not have it corrupted. We can't even find a way to keep a
government in place that long.

It doesn't surprise me that an institution combining sexuality,
spirituality, and commerce went terribly awry over the past 10
centuries. I get really resentful at those scholars I'm reading who
look only at what is here *today* and not nearly enough at what came
*before*.

It's fabulous to find other wonderful minds who share this interest
in temple women, and want to know more than what has been popularly
reported for the past 200 years.
