I think that we really can't look at this from our perspective,
modern educated Western women. There are many societies that see
sex as sex...a physical act of pleasure, not as something that is
kept exclusively between husband and wife. I am not a history buff
by any stretch of the imagination. I just recall reading in the
Kama Sutra that women were instructed in the arts of keeping a
lover, so women must have done this as well as men. I think women
would rather see their husbands go to a woman who can not become a
second wife, than to have her husband leave her or marry a second
wife....just guessing here. It is well known that men have a more
difficult time than women staying faithful to one partner. We look
upon the idea of it as abhorrent because we were raised in a culture
where marriage is a singular bond. If you have lived in a culture
where you never knew of such a thing, then polyamoury and the use of
sex workers would seem normal.
