I've seen enough pics to say .... hip mostly.... but waist is not out
of the question. Mosly the trowsers ride below the navel and you can
see the tattooing around the navel when there is some. In one pic in
the Ouseley series in the Bodliean Library, they're worn low enough
you can see the vulva henna coming up towards the navel.

However ... in many of the paintings if you get up close and personal,
you can see that the tattooing that went vertically from the throat to
the navel, and around the navel was painted over (probably as fashion
Europeanized) and in some of those paintings you can see that that
solid red hand dip is painted over earlier patterned henna (probably
ditto). If you compare the big paintings to the Ouseley watercolors
in the Bodliean, you can see that the tattooing certainly was there on
many of the ladies. and .... in the big paintings you can tell there
was often a clumbsy paint-over, and those would have been out on
display and if fashion changed there'd be some embarassment and wish
to "freshen it up" which wasn't the case with the watercolors Ouseley
brought out with him. Sometimes you can see the underlayer bleeding
through to show the henna patterns underneath the solid orange dip
henna. I'll go back week after next and try to photograph some of
those ....

Anyway ... the lady on knife point is one of those Asha posted (thank
you thank you!) and you can just see that she has a wonderful harquus
over her eyebrows. That series used to be in the Negerestan museum in
Teheran..... I wonder where they're going now...?
