possible compromise?Posted by Lauren on July 23, 2003 at 22:37:55: In reply to: thoughts please... posted by Willowhawk on July 22, 2003 at 17:20:31: : I received an email now asking for a dozen of my most popular: designs so that this company can use them to make stencils from for : the other henna artists to use along this tour. I aboslutely hate stencils, too- but... Suppose they can't find a real artist in an area, but they do want henna, and stencil is the best they can find on short notice? Of course you don't want your designs ripped off, and you're right to tell them no on that account, especially when you're using other people's designs at the basis for some of it. Perhaps you could offer to design a run of traditional designs that would work as a stencil. You should get paid your regular hourly rate for art while you're drawing and testing these, and you should have them sign a contract about the limitations of their use. That way, they get what they want (stencils) and you get what you want (a good gig and fair pay for your work) and the people getting henna will get at least some better art than yet another tribal tattoo flash butterfly. Whatever you do, stick by what you know to be right. I've been turning down the designs I don't want to do lately and I'm getting more work and more respect because of it- not to mention I'm happier.
