In a different aspect...Posted by Nick on July 31, 2003 at 14:39:53: In reply to: Re: Apparently we are not artists... steaming mad... posted by Willowhawk on July 31, 2003 at 09:03:07: : I believe Anne refers to it as McMehndi and I call it "tattoo flash: for cash". It's not an artform and degrades the traditional and : cultural beauty of mehendi...in my stubborn opinion. But is henna work that mimics tattoos *always* trash? I am working in a tattoo shop right now, and I am trying to bring part of my henna work in an interesting new direction. Lately I have been doing a lot of work styled after Japanese horimono tattoos, with shading and everything. This is a new technique that I have not seen anyone else try, and I am really in love with the results... gorgeous, classy traditional Japanese style henna work, modeled after gorgeous traditional Japanese tattoos.. So the henna work that I am doing in this vein is certainly not McMehndi. Does anyone want to host a picture for me so i can post it on the forum? ~Nick : I would write them back and politely (or maybe not-so-politely) : explain this art to them. Maybe they are of the opinion that it's : not art because it's temporary. : There's so many area's to touch on...henna in Indian/Persian : artwork; artistic ability to create a design; knowledge of : tradition/culture; knowledge of mixing paste/applying paste/etc; : uses on cloth/wood...and on and on. : : I ended up on a waiting list for a big art fair this year...only : because there is another mehendi artist there. : Willowhawk
