help, I need to vent!Posted by Anne Beltestad on September 3, 2003 at 15:22:08: so right before I went to Europe Kenzi and I did a gig at myuniversity. Cool, nice people, high hourly rate, etc. She did another gig by herself, then we have one planned for tomorrow. OK, no problem, it's a really bureaucratic place but I filled out all the right forms so we could get paid, and had a friend deposit the check while I was gone. Well, the morons made an accounting error and added a zero to the end of the amount. I hoped they wouldn't find out, but have no problem paying it back. That wasn't the end of it, though. I got an email (forwarded from the guy who hired me, who is cool) that the accounting department decided I should pay taxes! Why? Because I am an employee of the university - a miserably underpaid part-time employee - and since I exist in the records as such I (and by extension Kenzi) have to pay taxes - or I pay double taxes and give Kenzi what she is owed. Not only that but they combined the total (miscalculated) amount with my regular paycheck, and took taxes out of the bulk! I'm wondering if any of you have ever had anything like this happen (I haven't, in five years + of doing this) or if any of you "independant contractor veterans" have done work for a place where you are also on the payroll and had this happen, or if anyone has any advice. Basically, I'm not giving them any money back until they agree that I was an independent contractor in a separate relationship with the university and should not pay taxes as I would report that separately. thanks for listening and for any advice.
