self empoyed - my 2 years worthPosted by Mika on September 10, 2003 at 09:31:27: In reply to: I wanna quit my job!!!!!! posted by jen on September 9, 2003 at 22:04:38: I decided one day I had enough of working in corporate Toronto.Sure, i had a great job with lots of creativity (I'm a graphic designer), but i thought it would be best to try and go out on my own as a freelance graphic designer, work from home and get settled working on my own to get ready to be an at home mum. (Pro: working at home, Con: no paid maternaty leave when the day comes) For 2 years I struggled with sparce clients. The market had suddenly dropped and I left my job at a bad time. My husband was very supportive, but it was noticable that the income i had made at my job was needed. At the beggining of this summer, i was offered a regular weekend henna gig and a regular tattoo shop henna gig. But, at the same time, I found my dream design job and was hired full time. For 1.5 years I had very very little work and income. Then one fine day i was handed a dream job and regular henna gigs. I opted for my dream design job. I love doing henna, but the regular paycheck meant 1 year's paid maternaty leave when the day comes. I am fortunate to have a boss who will allow me to bring my baby(s) to work when the time comes. The moral of my story? You never know what is going to happen. Ask yourself: Are you prepared to live on little income? Are you motivated enough to fill the days when you have no appointments instead of watching telly feeling unacomplished? Do you have a little money saved up for rainy days? Being self employed is a wonderful feeling. You feel in charge and very very free. But you also feel guilty when not working or not having work to do. Any time you take off is time you are not getting paid. No such thing as holdiays and weekends, it's all a blur. Think carefully of the pros and cons. Like I said, self empoyment is gratifing, but of all my friends who are self employed, they all have the stress of low income. Some say money is not important, but when it comes to paying bills or having a well-needed evening out, it can get to you. smiles Mika, Her Serious Side
