What's needed to do henna? posted by Kymberlee on October 6, 2003 at 13:31:11: : I am curious as to what: is needed- when and where? Do you need a license, ins? If I just : start up a website and make business cards- is a business license : required? If you are "doing business as" with a business name, then yes, you should get a business license, if for no other reason than to cause problems for people who attempt to use your business name as their own in your business area. In Oregon, it's $25 for two years for as many counties as you need registering. It also prevents you from unwittingly stealing someone else's business name, as your state should do checks. : I assume for bigger events you need liability ins. and it : is a good idea to always have them sign a disclaimer sheet. Insurance is proving difficult to get for henna artists. If you're doing henna in the SCA, ren faires, or other re-creational societies, then there's a place that will insure you in those venues only. The company is listed at the bottom of Catherine's business rant. As for waivers, as Catherine says, they'll hold up in court for only as long as it takes the other lawyer to blow his nose with it. But if it makes you or your clients feel better, then by all means go ahead. : Any input : is appreciated, or websites, links, etc.. What about taxes? You have : to report if you earn over "X" $, right? Yes. Your state income tax booklet will tell you what that limit is. As for federal, you should be able to do the same thing. Keep careful records of EVERYTHING. You can never tell when the IRS may try to audit you. And make sure you're not infringing on another henna artist's business area. There's a lot of henna artists whose henna business is literally their survival. Black henna aka the toxic sludge of death is fair game, though. :) Illy
