thank you!! another question re: coal tar dyes...Posted by Holly on April 5, 2004 at 19:02:01: In reply to: Re: how to determine if henna powder contains green dye? posted by Catherine Cartwright-Jones on April 5, 2004 at 18:37:25: Oh henna goddesses! Please bestow upon me your infinite wisdom andexperience so that I may learn...! *bow* I have a good question: I'm fully aware that coal tar dyes (eg. PPD) are very bad, can cause dermitis, are a sensitizer, etc... I also know that coal tar dyes are present in a lot of hair dye, cosmetics and other products. I assume that there's a higher rate of incidents with 'black henna' because of the percentage of PPD in the paste. I have no idea how much green dye is put in henna (especially versus PPD in 'black henna')... Here comes my question: Have their been records of similar PPD burns and allergic/toxic reactions to green dye used in henna powder? What are the risks if you handle and apply this henna to your skin (and hair)?? I know that those little old boxes of henna powder in ethnic supermarkets have green dye added, otherwise it'd be obvious by the dusty grey colour they weren't anywhere near fresh. But I used to use those powders in the past, before I found this site... Had I been poisoning myself all along??? *eep*
