Tannins are a group of naturally occurring dyes that tend to bind with
keratins and collagens easily. Hennotannic acid binds with skin, hair
and fingernails better than anything else. Gallotannins are second
best (clove, oak gall) There are several others. Cutch, as is
available from dye suppliers is a brown glassy stuff, that dissolves
easily in water. I mixed a regular batch of henna, mixed same 1/2 and
1/2 with cutch and one batch of cutch....and the henna showed no
improvement with cutch (no worse either) and the cutch by itself
didn't show up. In fiber arts, most of the vegetable dyes either need
a mordant or long boiing to get the dye to bind with the fiber.
