Mustard Oil- Essential? NYC- stencils, etc?

I seem to remember when I got my hands "done" back in December, that the artist continually dabbed the designs with a combination of mustard oil and lemon juice and held my hands over a candle (the warmth factor there). Could this be right? Or is my memory failing me again!?

I have now purchased two different kinds of henna for my "experiment". I want to try that ole left side/ right side comparison that is so popular on skin cream infomercials and the like. :-)
The first kind I bought was a box of Afshan "mehndi powder" from Pakistan; it was purchased for $1.50 at an Indian grocery in NY's East Village. The box had a 1/4 of dust on it and apparently had been in the front window of the store for ages!
The second kind was a bag of bulk henna in black that I bought from a Indian grocery a bit north of the East Village one on Lexington Ave.
I asked the woman at the counter for her hints on mixing it up.
First of all, she told me that she's never used the black henna, just the red stuff. Secondly, she told me to mix it with black tea.
Nothing to write home about, but I thought I'd share.

I want to make the long #7 train trek to Queens over the weekend and take a wander through the different ethnic neighbourhoods there, including Little India. Can anyone recommend good shops there (or anywhere in NYC for that matter!) for mehndi stencils, ideas?

cheers-
Kayt
