When I got my mehndi done, I was also told that the fixative oil used was mustard oil (and the smell did remind me of cooking!). After I consulted an herbal reference, in which the author cautioned against letting undilluted mustard oil come in contact with the skin, I had my doubts about what exactly was in the oil used. I'm wondering if perhaps the "oil" was mostly lemon juice with just a bit of mustard oil (which can be irritating to skin) added. The oil used on me was very yellow in color, with a pungent aroma. Unfortunately, my memory's not too good regarding this either. I have tried using rubbing alcohol or eucalyptus oil as a fixative instead, and olive oil afterwards, but the results haven't been too dramatic.
If you don't find the stencils in your area, Artemis Imports has some Moroccan ones you can mail order.
