I know this sounds wierd but it works.

Mix your henna with Agnostura aromatic bitters (used in cocktails and cooking and available at any grocery store w/ a liquor section, it does contain alcohol so under 21's - sorry). Start by mixing until it's too thin, then let it sit for half a day to a day, it will thicken quite a bit, too much really. Then mix more bitters in a little at a time until it's the right consistency and put it in a cone or whatever applicator you are using.
After decorating skin, I re-wet the paste with an oil mixture called "White Flower", it is an analgesic balm made out of oils of wintergreen, camphor, eucalyptus and lavender. It smells like a breath mint and makes your skin hot in the same way that ben-gay does. It is made to go on the skin & soaks in pretty fast. I just get a little on my fingertip and carefully re-wet until I have gotten it all, and usually I can tell when it's wet enough because the paste starts to look a little glossy.
Now this is cool, after re-wetting two or three times, the paste starts to flake off, even if it's still damp. When it starts to do this, I just let it. I brush it off (careful of the carpet and furniture) with a tissue, and it doesn't take much. No scraping or pinching like if you re-wet with lemon and sugar. To give an example, the other night I put a design on my foot, once the pattern was on the total time the paste was on my skin (during rewetting and everything) was about an hour and a half. When the paste came off, the lines were a coppery color. I went to bed and in the morning it had turned a dark red brown. It's beautiful.
So this is important, after the paste comes off DON'T WASH THE SKIN OFF, just leave it alone for at least about 12 hours. I mean the paste is gone so you are free to get on w/ your life, but the longer it is before you wash where the pattern is, the darker it seems to get.
To recap: I am using nothing but henna, bitters and white flower oil.
If anyone is curious I will explain how I got around to trying the bitters in the first place.
good luck and best wishes to everyone . . .
