The older stuff is what I use for teaching classes, and when I want to play the ammonia trick. The older batch , with the base ph hit to make it go velvet black, is for my palms and feet. Any time henna on your palms or soles isn't what you were hoping for, can be tweaked up with ammonia. But, the old batch, with sufficient warmth, will still give you a great bittersweet on the palms, and cigar wrapper brown everywhere else. I used up a terrifying amount of my older henna last week, when I had a Cleveland library gig where 50 kids frantic for henna turned up and sat patiently through my history and traditions lecture, then dove into the pile of henna cones, and all left the library, wrapped with tp and saran and tape, looking like there had been a napalm disaster. The librarian had spent all day trying to explain to frantic people that I could only mamage 50 participants in the lecture, that I would be back in October. I have another one of these Saturday. When I've got to do a really difficult spot, (like a back or tummy that calls for all tannins on deck) or if I want screaming burgundies, I use the new stuff.
