Beginner's questions

I am relitively new to henna,though I've been fascinated with it since
I first saw a picture in a magazine about 20 years ago when I was
around 13. I've done some initial experiments, but I keep getting
stuck on the same problem. I'm hoping someone here can help me.

When I make up the paste, if I make it thick enough that the designs
don't run on my hand, I cant get it out of the applicator (I've tried
cones, plastic tipped bottles, and the metal tipped bottles.) If I
make it thinner, it runs. I think my henna is well sifted--at least
it appears to be. ( I've purchased it from Body Art Supply in
Portland, Oregon.)

Does anyone have any suggestions for a beginner?
