The pigment in nail polish directly interferes with measurement of oxygen saturation of hemoglobin; that's why all fingernail and toenail polish must be removed before surgery. If someone on the forum has a pulse oximeter, an interesting experiment would be to measure the pulse ox before and after hennaeing a fingernail. These experiments were done with nail polish on volunteers (doctors and nurses) and that's how those conclusions were drawn. Anyone interested could try the journals "Anaesthesia" and "British Journal of Anaesthesia" from 1991 to look up the exact reference for the nail polish experiments. If someone could do these with henna, the experiment would surely be publishable in a leading medical journal since nothing has been published on this before.
