It's probably best to err on the side of too thick so you can add
liquid to thin it out. I let my paste sit overnight and then see how
it squeezes out of the bottle, then add lemon juice to thin it out if
necessary.

Loretta Roome, in her book on henna, says that your paste should be
the consistency of hot fudge...that's real hot fudge, not Hershey's
chocolate syrup.
