It might be tamirind. This is a fruit, kind of sweet kind of sour
which is used in South American, South Asian and South East Asian
cooking. Some people add it to their henna paste. It is supposed to
make it darker, but I have never seen any difference. Because it is
somewhat sweet, it might make the paste more stringy, which is often
desired.
