exposing the children (but not to the elements)

Hej,

Yesterday, an Indian dancer came to our school and performed a few
traditional Indian dances for the kids. All grades were there, so my
sixth graders had to stay way far back in the gym, and from that
distance it was kinda hard to see the bindi the dancer wore, though
we were able to see that she had some kind of dye (turned out to be
red paint - not henna) on her fingers, hands and feet. I enjoyed the
performance a great deal, but I don't think many of my kids did.

Anyway, once we were back in our classroom, one of them asked
me, "Why do we have to learn about India." So I gave them a brief 10
minute overview of how many elements of Indian culture are becoming
part of American culture and that they know someone who has bindis
and henna - me. I still had a fading flower on my hand, so I took
off my brace and showed them. Now they're all interested in henna,
and some of them are interested in bindis, and I really wish there
was a place in the ciriculum to do more work on India. Maybe I'll
find them some internet sites . . .
