Lemon/Sugar turns my Mehndi into muck???

What am I doing wrong?
Consistently, when I try to dab my
designs with the lemon/sugar mixture
to fix them, the henna gets mushey
and smudges - or even falls off. I've
been putting it on with a cotton ball.
Seems I saw where someone was
putting oil on their designs before this
mixture!?! Also saw a spray bottle tip
- haven't tried that yet.

I'm getting the henna mix down and
even ok with my application
technique, but can't seem to bridge
this last hurdle. My designs last 7 to
10 days with the 'guinea pig' leaving
the henna on about 2 to 4 hours -
what can I say teenagers can't sit still!

Any tips in this area would be very
helpful. Also, I'll be watching your
scientific trials - this is how I like to
work, so I'm glad to see this started.
