I'm not a cosmetologist, but I know several and highly value the
information they have given me about keratin, collagen, ppd, henna,
heat and all that jazz. The problem with other preparations is that
they make the hair more porous, or more alkaline, or a combination
of both. That throws the molecules either towards the quinone green,
or the percipitant black.
I use really cheap shampoo (Suave), and the Mane and Tail conditioner
(occasionally) they sell at pet stores for dogs and horses. My hair
just grows. I don't mess with it.
To see if your hair is safe to henna:
Save all the rakings from brushing your hair. Mix up a batch of
henna, henna the ratball and see what happens. You'll get vile green,
swampbottom black or a lovely red cast over your natural color. I
just use all my leftover Castle Arts henna (link below) that I save
and throw in the freezer. It's just mixed with lemon juice .....
really simple.
