Many groups of people hennaed a girl first at her first menstrual
period ... others did first henna at marriage..... still others let
little girls have henna along with the rest of their family on
holidays.

I *wish* that henna actually did something for high blood pressure and
coronary disease.... if so, I'd be a happy lady. I can agree that
taking time to get hennaed and pampered is wonderful for stress and
hypertension, but I don't believe that the henna is responsible for
any lowered blood pressure, other than the same temporary drop you
get when you take a nap or have a glass of wine. Taking time out to
enjoy and relax is a good thing, whether or not it involves henna.

Hennaeing "healing" may be similar to "faith healing" in that the
touching, relaxing, beautification makes you feel so much better ....
but *feeling better* doesn't mean the underlying conditions have
improved. Those are two very different parts of a physical illness:
the physical aspect, and how you *feel* about the physical aspect.

In the tradtions where henna is used as part of a healing process ....
any properties that henna has other than an excellent skin conditioner
and sunblock, are probably just from the loving interaction between
people. The other instance would be where henna is used as a
metaphor for sacrificial blood, in which case "social theater" is
operational. Henna is used in part of Zar healing traditons as part
of the metaphor for sacrifical blood as part of crossing thresholds
(boundries between the physical world and the world of the
spirits)... but in that case henna is not applied as "medicine" and
the healing done in the zar addresses the person's relationship to the
affliction, rather than the physical nature of the affliction.
