The different ways of concieving of yourself vs other people (and the
change in these made the difference in acceptability of henna!):

The Conqueror prototype:
"They" are "different" from me, therefore they are inferior and
dangerous .... so I'll kill them, (unless perchance they could be
coerced into a cheap labor force, in which case, I'll keep them around
and expoit the hell out of them.... as long as they stay 'in their
place'.
(every country has done this at some time, so no point in anyone
feeling smug)

The National Geographic prototype (exoticism):
"They" are "different" from me, but they are exotic and interesting
... I'll idealize, rhapsodize, patronize and expoit them ... but they
are still *separate* from me.
"Exoticism" is an improvement over the "conqueror" mentality, but not
much.
Much of the early discussion of henna was very much in the "exoticism"
vein ... ie.... aaaaah it's sooooooo spiritual and ritualistic!

The Sesame Street Prototype (we're all just muppets on a small
playground)
"They" are not different from "me", and we can play nice together. We
each have a lot to learn from each other. Differences are not scary,
they are interesting. (See Mr. Rodgers, "I like you just the way you
are!"

Can you tell me how to get to Sesame Street?

There's a box of henna there somewhere......
