I find it makes a big difference how much the client cares about what
is being done. Some just wander up, quickly pick a design and just
say "I want that", but if a client takes time over choosing a design,
maybe asks for changes, and generally takes an interest, then yes,
you get an instant bond with that person.

The grooming comparison is good, but there's also something a bit
magical about the fact that this person has decided to trust you to
apply something to their skin that will become part of them for a
little while.
