: Hi Mark - I'm fine, how are you. I've been reading in the paper
how
: many people went to Brighton over the Bank Holiday because of the
: foot and mouth so I hope business was booming for you! Not having
: the luxury of a studio (or even my gazebo!!! I'm not allowed one on
: the beach) I have yet to venture down to sunny Margate yet! I've
: been going to a holiday camp (Hi de Hi!!!), and I went to
Groombridge
: over Easter which despite bitter cold weather was really good,
there
: were some brave souls who managed to bare bits of their anatomy for
: me to henna!!! I'm planning to kick off in Margate over the May
bank
: holiday - they've got a Summer (ha, ha!) Parade. So, I will report
: back with my first experiences of beach work!!! (sand in eyes
etc!)
: Take care, hope you can make it to Oxford - Lynn:
:
:
:
: : You don't need a licence in Oxford - wow, who will be the first
to
: : : sneak off on 13th May and sit on street and henna I wonder?
: Simon -
: :
: : : re. getting a licence for a beach. Contact the Foreshore
Manager
: : at
: : : the local council where you want to henna on a beach. Your
best
: : bet
: : : would be to go to a large tourist resort where they already
have
: : : concessions (donkeys, kids rides etc). Write a letter stating
: what
: : : you want to do, a bit about yourself, sort out insurance (I
: needed
: : : £5,000,000 public liability insurance for my local council).
Set
: : up
: : : a meeting with them and sell yourself. What they want is
: something
: : : that will attract people (give examples that all the foreign
: : beaches
: : : have them etc), they will also want to know that there will be
no
: : : comeback on them, people suing etc so they will check it out
with
: : : Health and Safety (who won't have a clue about it!) - tell them
: all
: : : about black henna, saying you don't use it. Hope this is all
: : : helpful. The other thing you could do (which I'm doing on a
: : Saturday
: : : night) is ring around the major holiday camps and ask if you
: could
: : : come one night. The one I'm doing it at take a percentage and
it
: : : goes to their owners club charity, which is a Children's
Hospice
: : this
: : : year. Good Luck. Just go for it, you are leaving it quite
late
: : for
: : : the summer so it would be worth you applying to a few different
: : : places. Let us know how it goes. Lynn
: : :
: : :
: : :
: : : : I am currently in Liverpool itself as a student but I
graduate
: : : this
: : : : : Summer and am still looking into getting work doing Henna
: over
: : : the
: : : : : summer.
: : : :
: : : : Hi Simon,
: : : : I don't know much about getting licences to trade; here in
: Oxford
: : : the
: : : : Council do not require street artists to have any official
: : status.
: : : : That's quite unusual I think, Oxford is probably not as much
: fun
: : as
: : : : working a beach. We have 2 -3 regular street artists and the
: town
: : : : could support more, lots of European Language School students
: all
: : : : Summer!
: : : :
: : : : The locals would not be pleased to see 'black' henna on the
: : streets
: : : : but if you don't do black you'd get a friendly welcome.
: : : :
: : : : Mark and Lynn might be able to help you more with the licence
: : : issue,
: : : : they work on the South coast.
: : : :
: : : : take care, Alex
: :
: :
: : How goes it Lynn????
: :
: : HOws the beach? bit soggy i expect from all this rain!!!!

Yeah shame the weather was pretty lowsy on bh weekend.....stack of
people and we managed to do okay despite it being feezing.

Hopefuly the mayday will be better for us all. Report back!!!!
