For Ren faires and SCA gigs, I wear appropriate Middle Eastern garb.
I try to ALWAYS wear a dark flowing skirt, so I can wipe my hands on
it. or I have a large "lap scarf" that I use to try to keep my
clothing clean. I still end up with henna in mysterious places though!

The first advice I got when I started doing Middle Eastern dance for
money was to "look exotic." Even when scheduling gigs, meeting
possible clients... just an ethnic scarf and chunky necklace seems
enough to convey that impression, and makes people feel more like
you're "the real thing." I imagine the same thing might hold true for
henna... but I guess it would depend on what type of gig it is, and
with what type of people.
