Old Henna Paste Reaction?

Hello,
I'm relatively new to Mendi, I first got a design last year at a
local festival. Bought my first kit a few weeks later from
CastleArt. Found this web page and been lurking every once in a while
since November.
I have a problem that just came up, and I hope someone here could
help me. I had some old henna from almost a year ago and when I
mixed it up and used it the same day--my design on my hands came out
great. However, I used the same paste about 8 days later on my leg
and as it began to dry-it didn't feel right. I took it off after
about 4 hours, and my design was very light, but I have a red mark
around the whole design. I mixed it the same as always and I've
never had this happen before. Can anyone help me figure out what
could have happened.
