dying eyelashes with henna

I have been experimenting with hennaing my eyelashes. I started out
putting a massive blob of past on, with my eyes closed, after putting
vaseline on the surrounding skin. It worked, but I got an itchy rash
(aloe vera gel fresh cut from the plant relieved this quickly). Since
then I have been using a mascara brush to apply the paste directly to
my eyelashes, so it doesn't get on my skin at all, but am having
trouble getting it to stick well. I have tried adding different
things to the mix: hair gel, natural plant-based glue. I will try
sugar-water next, but if anyone has any other ideas (or warnings!),
