Henna in highschoolPosted by jessica on May 4, 2001 at 19:28:31: Hi all -I just wanted to share this great experience with you. Yesterday I was a guest henna artist in my roommates class, he teaches high school english. I talked a little about henna the what and why and then tried to bring up social identity and tribal/ritual markings. For instance if you walk into a room and there is a guy wearing baggy jeans and one in tight pants who will you sit with or when some girls pluck out all their eyebrows and then draw them on on the fore head. For those girls in that social group they are beautiful but to the rest of us?? Henna can be used similarly with the different regions/cultures/ identies. I think it went well but talking in front of people is so hard for me. I didn't really expect the guys to be into it but boy was I wrong. The girls wanted one or two small designs applied by me but the guys---- they all wanted me to do a couple larger designs and then they worked on eachother. When I left the entire class looked like they'd been in a car wreck. We used micropore tape since they would be going into other classes and such, they were all bandaged on any skin they could gain access to. The students just through themselves into it, i had practice cones and jac bottles for them and one boy in particular set up on the other side of the room with a bottle. He took one of my design notebooks and had the other students lined up. He was so cute and pretty darn good too! They were adventurous and energenic. This was interesting I thought - most of them picked out designs and then wanted them combined or shifted, this never happens at festivals but is the fun part for me so it was an interesting shift. So - if any one has an opportunity like this take it. It does wonders to see so many truly interested. I was nervous to talk in front of people but they were just glad not to be taking a vocab. test so they were thrilled I was there. ** The instructor told me later that it was all his students with behavior problems that were the ones that sat with me all afternoon and were the most interested and fun!!
