Kenzi's directions are very good, but you may not want to bother if
your kit is that old. Like any herb, henna gradually loses its
potency as it ages and is exposed to light, heat, and air. If your
henna has been sealed carefully and has been kept dark and cool, it
may be useable after a year, but if it's a commercially prepackaged
item, especially the sort you buy at Barnes and Noble or similar
shops, you don't know how old it was or how it was stored before it
got to you. I get email every week from people telling me about how
they went through so much work and got no results, and I've done it
myself, so I understand how frustrating it is.
On the other hand, your henna may well be fine. It should be a
bright green and smell strongly of something like fresh-mown hay or
grass. If it's still strognly colored and smelling, I'd use it. If
it's pale or even slightly brownish, I'd toss it and start fresh with
new henna.
