No luck with the tea tree oil. What am I doing wrong?

I had so much hope for the tea tree oil giving me Mehndi Mud results.
I mixed up a batch of my regular henna. (henna, tea, lemon,
eucalyptus oil and clove oil.) I seperated it so I could test the
difference. I added about 1/2 a tsp of tea tree oil to 1/2 the batch
and left the other my usual,waited 4 hours, then applied. The one
with the tea tree oil stayed orange.(it's been three days now,still
orange.) My regular recipe did it's usual orange to burnt orange-y
brown. I really want the dark brown results of the Mehndi Mud but I
can't afford to buy it in the quanities I need. Am I missing
something. Thanks for your help.
