It's because henna is not a dye, not in the same sense that chemical
hair dyes are. It's very like you are scribbling with a henna-
colored crayon over paper the same color as your hair. You get shine
and strength but if the base color is too dark, you won't get a whole
lot of color other than where the light shines through the overlay.

I need to redo my hair soon, I will post before (well, sort of
before, I've been hennaing my hair for years) and after pics on my
site and let you know when they're up.
