Henna and tea tree oil experiment

After reading several posts about the benefits of the terpins in tea
tree oil I decided to do a little experimenting.

I took 2 tablespoons each of Jamila and Morrocan henna and mixed each
with a teaspoon of tea tree oil and lemon juice. Since the Jamila
usually takes longer to dye release I let it sit for about 12 hours
before using. The Morrocan is typically ready to use in just a couple
of hours so I let it sit for 3 hours. I then applied a design on the
back of each hand and latexed, wrapped in cotton and went to bed.

After 9 hours I unwrapped and noticed the stains were almost
identical. However after 48 hours the hand with the Morrocan henna
had darkened almost black. The hand with Jamila darkened somewhat but
not as substantially as the Morrocan. After a week the Morrocan is
still almost black.

I was surprised because in the past the Jamila with just lemon juice
would give me a deeper, longer lasting stain. The Moroccan with just
lemon juice would get almost as dark but fade a little quicker.

So it does seem that the tea tree oil will make a difference with
some hennas.
