Bravo! Very well said, and an excellent point.Posted by Zimra on May 29, 2001 at 22:10:44: In reply to: My Approach - Introducing henna to the masses (slight rant) posted by Anne Beltestad on May 29, 2001 at 18:37:49: I am SO glad to hear you say that! I am writing up a flyer on "thehenna experience" for my booth, that explains just what you said... it ain't no temporary tattoo. :-P (well, okay, it will have better gramma than that, and will explain the *process* of henna.) I had to re-evaluate my "henna direction" this past weekend. I was at an Asian festival, and a group of Pakistani women were doing henna: very crude designs done with toothpicks (they had run out of cones the day before) but they drew a LOT of attention, and they said they had made more than $200 the day before, on a day with crappy weather, doing hands only, mainly palms, at $5 and below. People *loved* the traditional aspect of it. Sitting down in a wondefully decked out booth (they sold rugs and textiles too) and relaxing for 15 minutes with someone holding my hand was wonderful! I'm doing my first big solo gigs this summer, and I have to say I was very nervous about all of the requests for kanji, animals, knotwork, on bellies, backs, etc. that I'm sure I'll get. I have always studied and practiced traditional henna, and I wasn't sure how well that would translate into the modern market. I am so glad to read your rant, it gives me hope for traditonal henna in this world of fake tattoes and fast fashion. I'm certain she'll do *some* silly designs, but what the hey. Semper Gumby.
