Joe-
I don't think you said or implied anything wrong, negative or
unecessary. In fact you bring up a good point, if 'safe' black 'henna'
is readily available people will very easily forget all the damage
that PPD can do and will go about happily applying a chemical, albeit
a safer one to their skin, then PPD pops up again.
If people percieve that there is a safe form of black henna available
it gives the impression that it's acceptible to put chemicals on the
skin under the guise of a plant based body decoration. This is just
not true. Black henna or any combination of chemicals should be
avoided particularly in young and developing children where damage can
occur quickly and be irreversible. If 'black henna' by chemical
addition rather than fresh henna/ammonia/heat is welcomed into the art
form it gives the impression of safety and authenticity, neither are
true.
In California I routinely encounter people that are excited to tell me
about the black henna they recieved in Mexico or Venice Beach. They
are genuinely upset and concerned when I talk to them about PPD for 2
reasons, they are concerned for their health and they feel they were
lied to about what henna really is. Often people think they have
allergies to henna, its just a reaction to the additional chemicals
used to turn it black. Anyway, enough rambling, black henna is bad,PPD
or otherwise, henna is good, temporary tattoos are good, face painting
is good. They are different. They should be marketed and sold as
different. Just my two cents. Keep it up Joe, everyone you meet will
remember you and shy away from black henna which is a collective goal
of the forum.
