Tamarind is very acidic and works as well as lemon juice, lime juice
and dried lime juice. The sugars in tamarind may give a slightly
nicer texture, but I'm not aware that it will make the henna darker
than any other source of acid.

A stash of tamarind and dried limes is a good thing to have when you
find lemons pricey or you just plain forgot to get any!

Acid is more effective at getting hennotannic acid released from the
leaves than a neutrual (such as water) by about 4 to 1 on a 70F day.
If the weather is very hot .... 100F, distilled water or rain water is
a better thing, as the demise will set in too fast. (unless you inert
your paste: remove all oxygen or anything else that would react with
the dangly H).
